Share your passion and spark a student’s interest in STEM

Learning Undefeated programs benefit from the support of volunteers. Your participation enhances our transformative STEM experiences and brings the life-changing power of STEM education to students.

By giving your time — a little or a lot! — you can completely change a student’s perspective on what it means to work in a STEM field.

No formal training is required, but we will prepare you for your assignment ahead of time.

“I would have loved an organization like Learning Undefeated growing up. Seeing students light up with curiosity and confidence was incredible. Representation matters. Seeing someone like you in STEM makes it feel possible.’ — Leiby Soto, REGENXBIO

“It’s always fulfilling to give back to future generations, to help support and nurture them as they are learning. You also are opening their minds and giving them some insight into what they can be.” –Tamu Walton, ENUM chair, Keysight Technologies

Mobile Laboratory Educator Assistant (MOST POPULAR!)

Time commitment: 2 – 4 hours

Learning Undefeated invites enthusiastic and passionate STEM professionals to talk and collaborate with middle and high school students onboard our mobile labs throughout the school year. Lab Assistants help Learning Undefeated instructors and students complete a series of assignments. The classes typically have 1-2 instructors and 8- 12 students who will rotate through the shipping container for 20-30 minutes at a time.

Guest Speaker (in mobile lab or classroom)

Time commitment: 1 – 2 hours

One of the main reasons that students don’t consider a career in STEM is the lack of relatable role models, but Learning Undefeated is changing that dynamic by connecting students with STEM professionals from all backgrounds, at all stages of their career. Guest speakers may be invited to address a class in one of our mobile labs or at an event.

Subject Matter Expert (curriculum development)

Time commitment: 5 – 10 hours

Subject Matter Experts specialize in a specific STEM-related area and collaborate with our educators to help develop new curriculum in their subject matter area of expertise. Topics range from cybersecurity to engineering to chemistry – a topic area could become part of our curriculum onboard a mobile laboratory!

Event Volunteers (Mid-Atlantic & Texas)

Time commitment: 2 – 4 hours

Several times per year, Learning Undefeated participates in large-scale public events that require additional hands to support our small but mighty staff team. Typical event volunteer activities may include helping students to complete an engineering challenge using everyday materials, judging student competitions, and/or sharing your enthusiasm for STEM by talking with students and parents about your professional journey.

Event locations vary but generally take place across the Mid-Atlantic and the South.

Host a Company Tour/Job Shadowing

Time commitment: 2 – 4 hours

Many of our students have never had the chance to see inside a real laboratory, manufacturing facility, or tech development company. We’re always looking for ambassadors within a STEM company to host a student tour.

Student Competition Judges

Time commitment: 1 – 2 hours, from your office or home

Learning Undefeated operates multiple student competitions each year, including the BioGENEius Challenge. Between May 1 June 30, we need experienced professionals to serve as volunteer judges. Just a one-hour time commitment; no prep work or follow-up obligations are required. Judging is conducted virtually.

Student Service Learning (SSL) Hours

Time commitment: minimum 1 hour

Learning Undefeated is a proud affiliate of the Montgomery County (Maryland) Volunteer Center and Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) and offers middle school and high school students service learning opportunities throughout the state of Maryland.

Students interested in earning service-learning hours must submit their MCPS Form 560-50 to their SSL coordinator for approval. Learning Undefeated offers a variety of activities for students to gain experience in science, technology, math, and engineering.
